Air travel with a dog is beginning to change. Italy is testing cabin travel for dogs weighing up to 30 kilograms, Virgin Australia has introduced selected domestic services for small pets, and specialist operators are creating cabin options for dogs that would never fit underneath a standard airline seat.<\/p>\n

The most important rule:<\/strong> an airline\u2019s weight limit tells us whether a dog is allowed to fly. It does not tell us whether that individual dog will cope well with the experience.<\/div>\n

A move towards larger dogs in the cabin<\/h2>\n

One of the most significant developments has come from Italy. Following approval from the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC, ITA Airways introduced a pilot model allowing dogs weighing up to approximately 30 kilograms to travel in the passenger cabin on selected domestic flights.<\/p>\n

The arrangement is different from the conventional under-seat carrier rule. A larger dog is allocated a dedicated window area beside its owner, with protective absorbent material on the floor. A leash and muzzle are required, and the number of larger dogs permitted on each flight is strictly limited.<\/p>\n

This is not yet a general European standard. It remains a controlled programme with route, aircraft and availability restrictions. Nevertheless, it could influence how other European airlines approach medium-sized dogs in the future.<\/p>\n

Australia joins the pet-in-cabin market<\/h2>\n

Virgin Australia launched its first pet-friendly cabin flights in October 2025 and expanded the programme during 2026. Small dogs and cats are accepted on selected domestic services.<\/p>\n

The animal and carrier must together weigh no more than eight kilograms. Pets must remain inside an approved soft-sided, leak-resistant carrier underneath the seat for the entire flight. Availability is limited and reservations must be made in advance.<\/p>\n

The programme is particularly significant because Virgin Australia became the first major Australian airline to offer regular cabin travel for ordinary pets rather than only trained assistance dogs.<\/p>\n

More choice in India<\/h2>\n

Akasa Air\u2019s \u201cPets on Akasa\u201d programme has also developed considerably. The Indian airline accepts dogs and cats on domestic flights, with different arrangements depending on the combined weight of the animal and its carrier.<\/p>\n

Pets weighing up to ten kilograms may be accepted in the cabin. Heavier animals can travel as checked animals or cargo, subject to the airline\u2019s conditions. The programme has already transported thousands of animals and demonstrates that demand for carefully managed pet travel is growing beyond Europe and North America.<\/p>\n

Cabin options for dogs that do not fit under a seat<\/h2>\n

A different model is appearing in the United States. Operators such as BARK Air and RetrievAir offer flights designed around dogs and their people. Depending on the service, larger dogs may travel in the cabin without being placed in the aircraft\u2019s cargo hold, sometimes with their own seat or designated space beside the owner.<\/p>\n

These are usually public charter services rather than conventional scheduled airlines. Routes are limited and tickets can be considerably more expensive. They are not a practical solution for everyone, but they demonstrate that cabin travel for larger dogs is operationally possible when the aircraft and procedures are designed around it.<\/p>\n

These limits are examples checked in September 2026, not a permanent guarantee. Airlines can change their pet policies, prices, carrier dimensions and accepted routes. On codeshare services, the rules of the airline operating the aircraft may apply instead of those of the company that sold the ticket.<\/p>\n

Always obtain written confirmation directly from the operating airline before paying for a non-refundable journey.<\/p>\n

What can flying do to a dog\u2019s psychological wellbeing?<\/h2>\n

Air travel can affect a dog emotionally as well as physically. An airport combines crowds, slippery floors, security checks, unfamiliar smells, announcements, baggage noise, pressure changes and long periods inside a carrier. Dogs may also pick up on their owner\u2019s stress.<\/p>\n

Possible signs of distress include persistent panting or salivation, trembling, whining, freezing, attempts to escape, refusing food, vomiting, diarrhoea or unusually withdrawn behaviour after arrival.<\/p>\n

A scientific study of dogs during transport found measurable physiological and behavioural stress responses. Veterinary guidance also recognises that confinement, unfamiliar surroundings, delays and separation can make flying stressful, especially for animals that have not been gradually prepared.<\/p>\n

What the research does not prove:<\/strong> most available studies measure stress during or shortly after transport. Evidence about lasting psychological harm from a single properly managed flight remains limited. Temperament, health, previous experience, journey length and preparation all matter.<\/div>\n
